Requirements: Android 2.2 and above
Overview: Bristol version of the famous semi-modular synthesizer ARP-2600 “Blue Meanie”.
Description
Bristol version of the famous ARP-2600 “Blue Meanie” semi-modular synthesizer with 3 oscillators, filters, 2 envelopes, noise, ring mod, electroswitches, signal processing, effects and fully reroutable with patch cords.
It works on all my phones, but the load can exceed the limits. A tablet version of this with modified high-resolution graphics will follow. You’ve been warned: that’s a little overkill for a phone, but really good fun.
Integrated sequencing is included for greater filter tweaks, output can be recorded to SD card and as ringtones etc.
The app supports X/Y accelerometers for pitch and mod, multitouch and zoom interfaces. The interface has options for analog filters and rich oscillators, but they consume additional CPU cycles. The interface features a floating piano keyboard under the zoom setting.
Zooming the UI can be done either with the trackball (Nexus/HTC have them) or enabling multitouch via the menu and then tapping the screen with two fingers at the same time – this will zoom in/out the UI. There’s also a floating “zoom” button in the corner, as gestures are awkward with active interfaces.
Patches are stored on the SD card along with factory sounds, there is an export and import option to exchange patches.
By default, the emulator tries to run with a set of options that offer reasonable quality and the lowest possible latency/delay. Audio quality can be adjusted using the menu options, but the lowest possible latency for pretty much all Android devices is currently 42ms, on my HTC Desire it’s 70ms. If you understand what that means, then the value might seem pretty high, but the app is still a lot of fun.
Tested on HTC Desire/2.2, LG Optimus 2x/2.2, SE Xperia Arc/2.3, Emulator Hires. The Arp2600 belongs to a family of emulators by the same author.
